First Impressions Last

First impressions make a lasting impact.

We might like to think that people should get to know us and allow our “true” personality to come out in its own time before making a judgement.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the general way of the world.

For someone lacking in confidence, making a positive impact through a first impression can be tough.

If things don’t go too well, this can compound the lack of self belief and esteem.

People make an instant judgement when someone walks into a room without them having to say a word; their body language speaks volumes for them.

Of course, what someone says also has an impact on the person weighing them up.

So, if we’re lacking in confidence and self belief, how can we make a better first impression and start to grow in confidence?

Firstly, before reading on, go grab a pen and a piece of paper.

Do this next exercise when you have time to give it your full attention.

Now, write a 30 second “advert” around how you’d like to be perceived.

Describe your talents, personal attributes and skills you bring to your home and work life.

Take no more than 5 minutes to complete the exercise and check you can read it back in 30 seconds.

As you did that was the language you used positive and about your strengths, or did some weaknesses sneak in?

Did you use modesty words like “fairly good at” or “quite good at”?

Did you smile while writing it?

Did you use your 30 seconds wisely?

Now, go back and rewrite it using really positive statements and focus on your body language too.

Above all, be proud and confident of your good points.

This may take some time to get comfortable with but it’s important to remember you’re not boasting or pretending to be the most important person ever; just that you are a good and worthy person.

Someone that people would like if given time to get to know you.

Now when you meet someone for the first time and they ask what you do, you will have practiced saying something positive.

Your answer can be crisp, precise and leave them wanting to find out more.

Notice how your confidence grows as people start to react to you differently.

Remember, it takes only seconds to make a first impression. Make yours a confident and positive one!
